Established in 2003 and headquartered in Orlando, St. Johns Insurance is a privately held company specializing in homeowners’ insurance products and services. St. Johns Insurance Company is owned by St. Johns Holding Company. The majority shareholder is St. James Insurance Group, a managing general agency and program developer that has been underwriting homeowners’ policies since 1984.
Today, St. Johns continues to solidify and expand its presence in the state. The company’s commitment to offering quality products and services has made St. Johns one of the most sought-after insurance companies in the southeast.
St. Johns management team is composed of seasoned insurance people with an average of 30 years’ experience in the business.
Mr. Schalk started his career in public accounting where he gained a specialty in audits and annual statement preparation of life and property casualty insurance companies. Most recently he held the position of Vice President of Asset Management for Heifer International Foundation, an endowment and charitable trust. Prior to that, he was the general manager of Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Company, serving the homeowners of Arkansas. As general manager, he was responsible for all financial, underwriting, claims, IT and reinsurance functions. Prior to joining Farmers Union, he was the Vice President of Finance and IT for American Management Corporation, a national managing general agent serving personal and commercial insurance clients in over 40 states. In 2013, Mr. Schalk joined St. Johns Insurance as Chief Financial Officer, and has contributed greatly to the financial structure and stability of the organization. He is a graduate of Arkansas Tech University with a BS in Accounting and is currently licensed as a CPA (inactive) in Arkansas.
Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Mertz started his career with St. James Insurance Group (formerly known as Braishfield Associates, Inc.) in 2001 as a Management Trainee based out of the company’s corporate headquarters in Clifton, N.J. In that role, he gained extensive training in underwriting for numerous personal and commercial lines programs and claims administration. Soon thereafter, he was transferred to the Orlando office, where he continued his training in branch management with an emphasis on sales and marketing administration. Most recently, Mr. Mertz served as Marketing Director of St. James Insurance Group. In the role, he was responsible for the company’s marketing and sales initiatives, distribution network management, as well as program development. Mr. Mertz received a B.A. in Sociology from The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, in 2001 and a M.S. in Business with distinction from The Crummer School of Business at Rollins College in 2015. He has obtained his Certified Insurance Counselor designation. (CIC).

Mr. Beck has 15 years’ experience in homeowners insurance claims management. Prior to joining St. Johns, he was regional claims manager and catastrophe claims manager for Risk Enterprise Management, the TPA Division of Zurich Risk Management Services, where he managed property claims for Florida and Texas Select. He was also responsible for planning, staffing, overseeing the technical and catastrophe vendor network and the performance of multiple branch offices. Mr. Beck is a graduate of Florida State University and is a Florida State Certified Residential Contractor and a Senior Claims Law Associate. He is licensed in Florida, Texas and South Carolina.
