Water Damage Do’s and Don’ts

In the event of water damages,
 
DO:  

  • Ventilate affected areas.
  • Remove standing water from flat surfaces by sponging and blotting.
  • Wipe water from wood furniture tops after removal of lamps and decorative items.
  • Blot wet carpeting with clean towels.
  • Take up saturated rugs and carpets when hardwood floors are at risk.
  • If available, place aluminum foil squares, china saucers or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water

DO NOT: 

  • Use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Leave wet fabrics in place; dry them as soon as possible. 
  • Operate TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpet or floors; especially concrete floors as serious injury may result.
  • Leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet floors. 
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet.
