Hurricane Facts
  • A Hurricane Watch is issued when there is the threat of hurricane conditions within 24-36 hours.
  • A Hurricane Warning is issued when hurricane conditions (winds of 74 miles per hour or more, or dangerously high water and rough seas) are expected in 24 hours or less.
  • Many automobiles will float in just two feet of water.
  • The average car can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water.
  • The average person can be swept off their feet in six inches of moving water.
  • Hurricane flooding can happen hundreds of miles from the coast and can place homes, not affected by the strongest winds, in danger.
