Pool Facts

  • Each year, more than 300 adults and children drown in home pools.
  • In the Sunbelt, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in the home for children under five years old.
  • According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 39,500 people go to the emergency room for injuries involving in-ground pools; 10,000 for injuries related to above-ground pools.
  • While it takes two minutes for an adult to drown, a child can drown in only 20 seconds.
  • Most pool-related injuries result from slipping and/or falling.
